The Holiday Writing Slump

Let me start with the obvious. Writing is hard. There is no amount of practice or preparation that would make writing easier. Take it from me, the woman who spent two whole months plotting an entire story only to write less than 10K about it before abandoning hope.

It doesn’t mean it’s not possible, it’s just hard, and when the holidays come around it can be even harder. There’s family obligations. There’s gift giving and financial strain. There’s even bad memories for a few that are just too hard to shake on any given day. There’s travel and explaining why you don’t have an s/o yet or why you and your s/o aren’t getting married yet.

The holidays are also a peak time for people to break up! How are you going to write at a time like this?

Don’t Beat Yourself Up

I’m in a very particular mindset when it comes to holiday writing. The first is just don’t beat yourself up over being able to keep up the word count. Even if throughout the rest of the year you’ve been cranking out a good chunk every day, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed if you can’t accomplish it during the holidays.

This time of year there’s a thousand more things going on than normal. You will be traveling and doing things you normally don’t do. Keeping up with writing may no longer be your top priority, and that’s okay. Don’t beat yourself up over lost writing days when you’re doing things for your mental health, for your family, or just because.

Every Word Counts

Now, if you do get a day or two to write remember that you should be proud of any words you get down. You only get a thousand words during the holiday break when you’re used to ten thousand? Who cares, you still got those words down.

You’re More Important

And please remember, holiday or any day, you and your health are more important. If you need a break from writing to get yourself back to a healthy place than so be it.

What are you all doing for the holidays? I’m visiting family…right after telling my boss I’m quitting! Crazy right? But I’m starting a new and exciting job come January. Life is absolutely crazy. I’ll talk more about all that in a different post.

But for now I leave you with a happy holidays! Please do let me know in the comments below what sort of holiday shenanigans you’re getting into yourself.

See you next week!
