Day six of the new year. I actually waited until I wrote this post to make any resolutions. As I stated last year, I’m going about resolutions differently than most. And it worked out pretty well. I created concrete resolutions and some vague growth resolutions. And I made sure I created more than one resolution…because life is a mess and it makes resolutions hard.
2019 was definitely better for me than 2018 and 2018 was better than 2017. I contribute some of this to how I looked at myself and my resolutions. Create a list that has super achievable and some not so super achievable goals to balance out your year. Take you out of your comfort zone but give you a safe landing space if you don’t achieve everything.
The don’t beat yourself up over it mentality. It’s kind of a nice space to be honestly and I’ve achieved more with this concept then I ever did with strict singular resolutions
Now on to 2020’s New Year’s Resolutions.
Once again we’ll break down my resolutions into their different parts. Let’s start with concrete goals. These are ones that have quantifying numbers and can be gauged by that number at the end of the year.
- Post every Monday on this blog
- Create a Facebook for this blog
- Promote this blog on all my social media
- Collab with people on this blog and other platforms
- Complete a first draft of a novel
- Start up photography again
- Pay off my credit card bills
- Double my savings.
As you can see, a lot of my resolutions are the same as last year. Part of that is because I want to keep up the routine and for some it’s because I didn’t make it the first time around. That’s always okay and it’s important not to give up if you don’t make it in the end.
These goals tend to be ones that will constantly be in my life. They are ones where you don’t have a way to quantify them. It’s more I wanted to be better at the end of the year than I was at the beginning. I wouldn’t recommend these as main goals because of how vague they are. You start to focus too much on if you did enough growth than if you did any at all.
- Stay organized
- Eat healthier
- Exercise more
- Save more money
Once again. These aren’t inherently bad, but if you want them as your main goal I’d define them.

Lastly, I like to mention I still like to use the time between the Westernize New Year and the Chinese New Year to establish your goals because if you realize you can’t reach them or your life drastically changes, you’ll be fine. It gives you time to figure out what works without being pressured by the looming New Year’s Date.
Plus, I totally recommend learning more about the Chinese New Year. When I started using the space between January 1st and the Chinese New Year to figure out what I really wanted in the year, I started looking up the history and the relevance of the Chinese New Year. It’s super cool and I always remember to send my friends overseas a Happy Chinese New Year and it’s great.
